Prevent a pregnancy mask

Have you ever heard of a pregnancy mask? This is a (usually temporary) skin condition that often occurs during pregnancy. It is characterized by the development of dark, pigment-rich spots on parts of the face, usually on the forehead, upper lip, cheeks and sometimes the jawline. This pigmentation occurs as a result of the increased production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of the skin. Hormonal changes, especially an increase in estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy, can contribute to the development of a pregnancy mask. This pigmentation can vary in intensity and often disappears after delivery, although in some cases it may take some time for the skin to return to its normal color. Protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure and wearing sunscreen can help reduce pigmentation and prevent it from getting worse. Therefore, wear sun protection with preferably factor 50 every day, even when it is winter and cloudy.
